Homework expectations

Room 6 Homework

Welcome to the Room 6 family. Each week your child will be given a new homework sheet Which will be glued into their homework book. This will contain 10 basic facts, 5 spelling words, a reading log area, and a notice area for any reminders and classroom notices. In order for optimum achievement it is essential that your children do their homework each and every night. In room 6 we encourage the children to take responsibility for their own learning. Please send along a note or write in their homework book if for any reason your child is unable to complete their homework.
According to national standards, New Zealand children are not achieving well in writing. At Tawhiti we have made this a learning focus for both teachers and children. As a result of this I run a very comprehensive writing lesson each day. In order to move children’s achievement they may need to complete some work at home. This will only be if your child has not completed this in the time given.
Each Monday your child will be tested on their weeks homework by our classroom Learning Assistant , Karla Burgon. After testing Karla will put in new spelling words and basic facts according to their achievement. This achievement is monitored over the term to assess progress. In room 6 we put a lot of time and effort into our teaching and learning practises. Please help us to help your children achieve to their highest potential.

Notes to help you

Children can write their spelling words down to help them
Basic facts must be recalled instantly (with in 2 seconds of asking the question)
Reading needs to be for 15 minutes each night. Encourage your child to read in bed at night before lights out.

Reading
Reading groups are seen at least three times per week a week. On these days your child will have a new book/ story to take home.
On other days your child will select a book from their browse box
Some children may have an approved chapter book which they may bring home and read for homework. Please ensure your child reads every night this is so important.
If you have any concerns regarding homework, please don’t hesitate to contact me. .
